One of the service projects in which the Quilters Guild is involved is making quilts for the children whose familes stay at the Ronald McDonald House of Durham while the children undergo treatment at Duke University Medical Center. Some of the quilts are delivered to the Ronald McDonald Family Room on the pediatrics floor of Duke University Medical Center. Many parents use the kitchen, bath, computer and laundry facilities at the Family Room while their children are in the hospital.

This says it all:

"I want to share some pictures of the wonderful quilts made for the children at the Ronald McDonald House. They were very excited to pick out their own special blankets. Mabel, the young lady sitting to the left with the ladybug quilt, received a double lung transplant in March. Mabel and her mother go to the Center of Living every day for Mabel’s rehabilitation. Dana, the young lady sitting to the right in pink, is waiting for a lung transplant. Mabel and Dana became great friends while staying at the House and found many hours of warm comfort with their quilts. Thank you to our wonderful quilters for the Hope that your beautiful creations bring to our children” Derwin Dubose, Annual Fund Director

The children are proud to display the handcrafted quilts donated to the Ronald McDonald House each year

The mother of this 14-year-old boy from the Chicago area chose this quilt for him. They have been coming to Duke and the Ronald McDonald House for many years. He has severe congenital vision problems including glaucoma and cataracts and has had multiple surgeries. His mother told me that unfortunately someone must die before he can have what he now needs -- a cornea transplant. He talked excitedly about the two American Idol finalists. I left wondering what it was like to only hear American Idol.
